SBJ's HOME-BASED PROGRAM
SBJ began with 18 eager young ladies, ages 7-21 in the Washington, DC metro area, with principal instructor and founder Mama Akosua Akoto. The program was initially year round with bimonthly workshops. It was profoundly successful, aiding all of the participants in developing a core knowledge of the rhythms and dances that they were studying as well as the strength, humility, skill and perseverance necessary to be artists and conservators of the culture. More information will be made available soon.
"SBJ is a monumental dance program for youth spawned by the tenacity of Dr. S. Johnson, whose pioneer dance program at Howard University was incomparable. Dr. Johnson's "just do the work"-philosophy is evident in the program's curriculum, instructor's committment to strength through the culture, language, and proper execution of dance, integrity of information through study and research and the inspirational responses of its participants".
